I bought a 2017 Volvo V90 D4 (2.0L) with 100k miles in excellent condition. As a new owner, I changed all oils with genuine Volvo products, flushing the transmission 5 times until the oil was clear. The old oil was black, suggesting it was never changed. After the change, gear shifts became extremely smooth. However, an issue appeared when the car is cold, especially near freezing temperatures. The transmission struggles to engage gears, causing high revs and delayed shifts, similar to how a scooter behaves. After about 5 minutes of driving, the transmission warms up and works normally. If I warm up the car in Drive (D) for 5 minutes while parked, it drives fine from the start. The dealer advised against changing old transmission oil if it hasn’t been regularly maintained, claiming it often causes new issues. They said they’ve never encountered this specific problem before. Additionally, when climbing steep hills, a semi-loud chirping noise occurs around 4th gear. It disappears if I ease off the gas or accelerate further and doesn’t reappear on flat or downhill roads. The noise doesn’t affect driving but feels out of place. I attempted to repair the issue, however it appears that the issue was not caused by this and most likely lies in the valve body.
