A neighbor swore his porch song was too good to waste on a dog and stray cats, so he dragged him down to a makeshift studio behind the feed store. He was never much for crowds, and folks said he got uneasy around women - blamed it on his looks, which he joked were “God’s idea of a warning label.” A handful of 45s were pressed, though confidence was low. The label even joked about cropping Virgil off the sleeve and keeping the dog. Not much else is known: he never married, never had kids, just lived out his days with dogs, cats, and a few hens. Decades later, one of those old vinyls turned up in a box of gospel singles at a yard sale.
