Sally Monroe Sally Monroe is a song I’ve performed with brother in law, Dónal O’Hanlon for many years. It namechecks, Ayr, Belfast, Newry, Warrenpoint and Carlingford and was paired with my painting of Carlingford Lough for my 2013/14 Wall to Wall Exhibition. Viewed from Omeath in County Louth, the painting shows the Lough and shoreline shrouded in low cloud and mist. Carlingford Lough is the site of the dramatic finale to this story of two young lovers, who tragically endure shipwreck en route to a new life in Canada.... ahh, the joy of folk song! Norman Holmes and Paul Archer carry the main instrumental motif on flute, fiddle and octave violin, whilst I join in on mandolin. Vocals and guitar accompaniment is by Dónal and myself whilst Sean, who engineered and recorded the track also joins in on sampled keyboards. Norman and Paul pop up in still photos and background images show archive photos from all the song locations plus photos of two, long gone, Irish ‘Sally’s’.
