Lok Baintan Floating Market is one of South Kalimantan’s most iconic traditional markets, located along the Martapura River in Banjar Regency. This market has been active since the 18th century and remains a vibrant part of the local culture. What makes it unique is that all trading happens on boats, with sellers—mostly women—using small wooden canoes called jukung. They sell a wide variety of goods including fruits, vegetables, traditional cakes (kue), fish, and household items. The market starts very early in the morning, usually around sunrise, and lasts only a few hours. Buyers and sellers interact directly on the water, creating a lively and colourful scene. Unlike modern markets, most transactions are done in a traditional barter system, especially among the local traders. The floating market is not only a place for commerce but also a social and cultural gathering point for river communities. It reflects the deep connection between the people of South Kalimantan and their waterways. Many of the traders have inherited their boats and trade practices from previous generations, continuing a long-standing tradition. The women wear traditional attire such as tanggui (broad-brimmed hats) and colourful sarongs, adding cultural richness to the market’s visual appeal. Lok Baintan has also become a tourist attraction, drawing photographers and visitors from around the world who want to experience its authenticity. The market is best accessed by boat from Banjarmasin city, giving visitors a scenic river journey. Government and local communities have made efforts to preserve the market as a cultural heritage site. Despite modernization, the spirit of Lok Baintan remains strong, upheld by the dedication of the river traders. It serves as a living museum of Banjar culture and an example of sustainable, community-based trade. The sounds of paddles splashing, the smell of fresh produce, and the sight of colorful boats all contribute to an unforgettable experience. Lok Baintan Floating Market is not just a market—it is a living tradition that continues to thrive in the modern era.
