The place of art in the Social Studies classroom has often been decorative or illustrative—to embellish a bulletin board or to demonstrate how a society looked. But social scientists like V. Gordon Childe have said that art is one of the components that separates a “civilization” from less developed cultural groups. Hence, artworks of all kinds offer a window into the societies and civilizations that Social Studies courses explore. This professional development opportunity for North Carolina Social Studies teachers will introduce and suggest innovative and engaging methods for bringing art into the classroom and to help students develop higher level analytical skills. Originally broadcast Nov. 10, 2011. NCSSM, a publicly funded high school in North Carolina, provides exciting, high-level STEM learning opportunities.
