Ask A Midwife's Chavah Benzion talks about "When Baby Arrives Before the Midwife" - What You Need to Know. Sometimes labor begins suddenly and before the woman realizes it, the baby is coming out! This doesn't happen to most women but it's not as uncommon as you might think. There are many situations that may predispose the pregnant woman to having a quick, or precipitous birth. If her first labor was under 3 hours, her second labor may be even quicker. Sometimes a woman experienced a previous long labor and for whatever reason, this time her body has done most of the early labor without any pain, and when she realizes there is something happening, her body is already in the transitional phase of labor and she gives birth smoothly but rapidly. As a midwife, Chavah has seen time and again how most women in this situation carry a certain amount of trauma from these quick birth experiences. With no care provider present to reassure her and monitor her well-being, she may feel afraid. As Chavah states in this video, most of the time when a baby is coming quickly, things are actually ok, and there isn't an emergency. When there isn't a medical emergency, we can give ourselves the best chance and a safe and positive experience by keeping a few key things in mind. Stay calm and focus on keeping the experience normal. Find out how...
