While visiting Venezuela, I happened to witness this powerful procession by the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) in Caracas. The PCV is one of Venezuela’s oldest left-wing parties, historically rooted in Marxist movements and once allied with Hugo Chávez’s Bolivarian Revolution. For many years it worked alongside the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), especially during the Chávez era and early years of Nicolás Maduro’s government. In recent years, however, the relationship between the PCV and Maduro’s PSUV has seriously deteriorated. The PCV has publicly criticised Maduro’s government for what it calls authoritarians policies, neoliberal economic measures, and attacks on workers’ rights, going so far as to refuse participation in elections over what it sees as a lack of democratic guarantees. The split has even led to legal and institutional conflicts: Venezuela’s Supreme Tribunal of Justice has intervened in the PCV and appointed a rival leadership — a move the party describes as illegitimate and part of broader efforts to silence independent leftist voices. This video captures one moment in that unfolding political scene — showing a party that remains active, vocal, and deeply engaged in Venezuela’s complex political landscape, even as it distances itself from the current government in Caracas.
