Under blazing sun, French President Jacques Chirac and his wife Bernadette welcomed leaders on a red carpet unfurled on the steps of the building. US President George W. Bush arrived at around 1230 GMT, accompanied by his wife Laura. Shortly before, Chirac welcomed the Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Eastern European and Commonwealth leaders were also attending, including Australian Prime Minister John Howard and New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark. Sunday's lunch was part of a weekend-long programme of events marking the anniversary, giving leaders a chance to put aside their differences to thank the Allied forces behind the D-Day invasion that broke Nazi Germany's grip on continental Europe.
