In this Sunday night lecture (3.24), Brad Sarian explains why Restored LA is moving from a complementarian view where only men could be elders, to mutualism (egalitarianism) where women will be ordained as elders and pastors. He unpacks the importance of understanding biblical interpretation, the biblical narrative, the biblical passages that are most often debated, and then some common concerns. Main points: CREATION - In the beginning, man and woman were created equally in God’s image and given the same authoritative tasks to multiply, fill, and rule the earth. FALL - Men exclusively ruling over women is a result of sin, not a part of God’s original design. ISRAEL - Patterns in the Old Testament narrative are not necessarily meant to be repeated in the New Testament Church. REDEMPTION - Jesus came into the world to inaugurate his kingdom and destroy the devil’s works, which includes the end of men exclusively ruling over women.- 7 - CHURCH - The early church celebrated and included women who led, taught, and exercised authority. NEW CREATION - Men and women will reign together with Christ in the new heavens and new earth. 1 TIMOTHY 2 - A simplistic reading of Paul’s “prohibition passages” is untenable because they contradict other parts of Scripture where God empowers women to teach and have authority over men. (1 Tim. 2:11-15; 1 Cor. 14:33-35) 1 TIMOTHY 3 - The elder qualification of “husband of one wife” is addressing sexual purity, not gender. (1 Tim. 3:1-13) Ordaining women elders is not a slippery slope toward affirming gay marriage, radical feminism, or theological liberalism. Since there are differences between men and women, it is important for the health of the church family to have both “mothers” and “fathers” leading together. 00:00 - Mutualism in the Church 10:57 - Biblical Interpretation 21:24 - Biblical Narrative 22:24 - Creation 29:09 - Fall 31:45 - Israel 38:48 - Redemption 42:25 - Church 55:12 - New Creation 57:06 - Biblical Passages (1 Timothy 2) 1:25:09 - Biblical Passages (1 Timothy 3) 1:36:08 - Common Concerns
