Extortion is a massive problem in South Africa. It affects many industries, areas and individuals – and crimes in this arena can prove fatal, people have before been murdered. Railway tracks and construction sites have been disrupted and extortionists even go after pensioners. Restaurants and entertainment venues are also targeted. This video shows how a stretch of around 750m in Cape Town’s city centre has been the focus of extortion and related accusations for years. It points to how deeply entrenched and intricate South Africa’s “protection fee” problem really is. Reporting by: Caryn Dolley Filmed by: Bernard Kotze Edited by: Rufaro Chiswo Produced by: Emilie Gambade Caryn Dolley is an award-winning journalist and author. She has covered organised crime in South Africa for nearly two decades, exposing how the country fits into the global criminal landscape, how gangsters appear to have infiltrated aspects of private security, and how politics, rogue intelligence, and state corruption are infused in these noxious arenas. Despite threats to her safety, she remains committed to uncovering the truth and bringing it to the public. If you like this video, subscribe to our YouTube channel for more.
