静婷 Tsin Ting (Jing Ting) passed away on October 20, 2022 at the age of 88. To commemorate the passing of 静婷, here is one of my favourite songs by her – sung in the Shaw Brothers 1967 film "Song of Tomorrow". The lyrics are particularly beautiful and poignant, written by Shen Hua 沈華 with the music by Gu Jiahui. 顧嘉輝. The film starred Ling Bo 凌波, Qiao Zhuang, 喬莊 and Jin Han 金漢 Bless you 静婷. Tsin Ting, formerly known as Guo Dashu, was born in Sichuan in 1934, and went to Hong Kong with her family in 1949. To help her family financially, she started singing in nightclubs from the age of 17. In order to hide her identity, she changed her name to Xi Tsin Ting, using her mother's "Xi" surname. But as time went on, she preferred that people just call her "Jingting". She never studied vocal music, and started as a harmony singer, with singers such as Yao Li, Ge Lan, etc. Because of her intelligence and quick reading of scores, she soon became highly regarded. Because of her beautiful singing, she started dubbing for actresses in musicals. She became the main singing star of Shaw Brothers movies, and the only singer who signed a contract with them. Her salary was better than those of most of the movie stars. Jing Ting was also known as "Hong Kong's chief song queen", ranking first among famous singers. In 1972, Jing Ting withdrew from the music scene to the United States to take care of her only daughter. Occasionally, she came back to sing. She also continued recording albums during the 1970s, 80s and 90s. In 1997, on the occasion of EMI Records' 100th birthday, she sang in the Golden Shining Stage Concert with Liu Yun, Cui Ping, and Wu Yingyin. In the 1998 Golden Shining Shining Stage Concert, she sang with Liu Yun, Beilei, and Wu Yingyin. In 2009, her own 50-year concert was celebrated. In her later years, Jing Ting lived a secluded life in retirement. She died of natural causes in her sleep at her apartment in Taipei at 2:00 a.m. on October 20, 2022.
