Epigenetics refers to the way the environment influences gene expression—in other words, how genes are turned on or off without changing the underlying DNA sequence. Infections such as tick-borne disease (TBD) and mycotoxin illness are largely stealth pathogens. These organisms can pierce the cell membrane, travel toward the nucleus, and take up residence in ways that alter genetic expression. They can switch genes on or off, sometimes in ways that are adaptive, and other times in ways that are harmful. For example, we know that women with TBD have a higher incidence of breast cancer, a finding supported by Neil Spector’s work at Duke University. This highlights the reality that genetic sequencing alone is not sufficient to fully understand what is happening in complex chronic illness. To truly understand patient illness patterns and risk, we must also understand the epigenetic influences on the genome—how infections, toxins, and environmental stressors shape gene expression over time.
