Abdi Negash is an antique book dealer and vinyl collector based in Addis Ababa. 15 years ago, before he started his path, he used to work at the Italian BookShop (located near Enrico pastry, Addis Ababa). After the Italian BookShop closed down, Abdi decided to start his own shop with the use of the experience he had gained there. In our interview with Abdi, he stated that it was the Italians he worked with, and their eagerness to learn more about Ethiopian history, that inspired him to embark on this path. From his years of experience in the field, Abdi told us that the hardest part of his job is getting his hands on these historical materials. Even though the production of vinyl records was halted in 1982 G.C., Abdi currently has more than 1000 vinyl records of Ethiopian songs in his possession, including rare records from Mahmoud Ahmed, Tilahun Gessese, Hirut Bekele, and many more. Abdi mentioned that he is usually tempted not to sell certain items. He prefers the satisfaction he gets when researchers or travelers come to his shop and find a very rare item they have been looking for. “Abbysinie”, A book written by a French author named Achille Rafray in 1876, nearly 150 years ago, is one of the books that Abdi deems unsellable. Similarly, “In Abissinia”, a book written after the Battle Of Adwa by Carlo Annaratone in 1974, is another book that visitors won’t have the chance to purchase according to Abdi. We also had the chance to come across a book about the Geez language, written in 1630. He believes this 400-year-old book is solid proof for the existence of Geez in ancient times, and therefore the book will not be up for sale. Abdi Negash loves what he does for a living. There have been times when he has bought an item with the last penny in his pocket. But he says he has no regrets regarding the life he chose. He said that the journey was made easier by people who have always helped him. He dreams of one day publishing a translated version of some of the old books he owns. He wants the books to be handed on to the next generation with all the secrets and history they have within them.
