The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is 25 years old! Opened on April 15, 2000, the original line went from 34th Street in Bayonne or West Side Avenue in Jersey City to Exchange in Downtown Jersey City. With further extensions to Newport in 2000, Hoboken in 2002, and further extensions into Bayonne (2003, 2011) and service to Weehawken, Union City, and North Bergen, this system, owned by NJ Transit and run by a DBOM consortium (Design-Build-Operate-Maintain), averages about 50,000 riders per day and is only the second light rail system in the state of New Jersey (the first being the Newark Light Rail, formerly the Newark City Subway).
