Hitler is popular in India. People on the street describe their admiration for Hitler as: “a great leader”, “a lover,” “a great artist” and “a great inventor”. Footpath book stores contain copies of Mein Kampf. Bollywood films feature heroic characters named Hitler. In this film, academics and others explore the reasons for Hitler’s popularity, while at the same time noting how India’s Jewish communities live in a nation relatively free of anti-Semitism. The reasons for Hitler’s popularity lie far deeper than the Nazi appropriation of the Hindu swastika. In the 1930s the leaders of the rising Hindu nationalist movement the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were explicit in their support for Nazi style racial purity policies. Some freedom fighters, struggling against British colonialism, sought support during World War II from the Germans. This video affirms the need for Holocaust education in a land where Hitler is seen by many as a cultural icon and the embodiment of good leadership.
