For the final day of regular HST operation on Virgin Cross Country, all of the active power cars were given a sticker on the front to mark the occasion. Here, 43092+43160 are seen leaving New Street heading south for the last time, followed by 43157+43154 on the very last scheduled HST departure from Birmingham New Street later that day. It wasn't to be the end for the HST at Birmingham though! HSTs from Midland Mainline and even First Great Western made appearances at New Street on hire to Virgin, then in May 2004, HSTs began operating on Virgin Cross Country regularly once more. Arriva, the new operators of the CrossCountry franchise now have HSTs in their fleet, so the sight of a trusty Intercity 125 at New Street is once again a regular occurrence.
