The great floods of the last century (especially the one in 1950) not only swept away iconic bridges, but also the old fulling mills and orchards that gave the neighborhood its name. The church we see today is a symbol of resilience in the face of that force of nature. Facts about El Vergel Church Its real name: Although everyone knows it as El Vergel, its official name is the Church of the Annunciation. Heart of the flower district: It is located in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, historically famous for its orchards and gardens (hence the name "Vergel," meaning "garden"). Charming architecture: Unlike the grand marble cathedrals in the city center, this church stands out for its exposed brick and adobe construction, giving it a rustic and welcoming feel that is very photogenic. Colonial influence: Its design follows the style of Spanish mission churches, with a front plaza that served as a meeting point for the community. Close to history: It is located a short walk from the Manuel Agustín Landívar Site Museum and the ruins of Todos Santos, connecting colonial Cuenca with the Cañari and Inca periods. Living tradition: In front of the church you can still find the famous vendors of "viento" (empanadas) and typical food, keeping the popular gastronomy of Cuenca alive.
