The Adventures of Captain Underpants (1997) by Dav Pilkey is a children's graphic novel that launched a popular series. It follows two prank-loving friends, George and Harold, who create a comic book about a superhero named Captain Underpants. After being blackmailed by their grumpy principal, Mr. Krupp, the boys use a “3-D Hypno-Ring” to hypnotize him into becoming Captain Underpants. Chaos ensues as the hypnotized Krupp jumps out a window to fight crime. The boys chase him and end up foiling a plan by the evil Doctor Diaper to destroy the moon. Though they manage to return Mr. Krupp to his normal self, a mishap with the Hypno-Ring means that any time someone snaps their fingers, he transforms back into the ridiculous but heroic Captain Underpants.
