Finding evidence of the mass grave where the body’s of the government roylist mercenarys lie after surrendering to the Convenantor forces they were frog marched to Newark castle and murdered, the women and children whom were part of the Montrose army camp were taken to Selkirk Tolbooth and slain in cold blood in the market square. No mercy was given by the Covenanters, in my opinion because the army of Montrose had sacked and plundered many towns in the Scottish Borders on the way to there demise at Philiphaugh. After learning about the local Galashiels ghost story regarding Buckholm tower and James Pringle also the Covenanters dungeons at Edinburgh I felt very sympathetic towards the Covenanters, learning about what happened at Philiphaugh I take back a lot of that sympathy. I still believe the royalists government supporters (the red coats) that eventually won were massively in the wrong for forcing Scotland to obey there religious law. The Covenanters were not invading England enforcing there religious law. So I still side with the Covenanters I just wish they’d have shown more mercy.
