Cowardly Christians

In Mark 4:35-41 Jesus calms an enormous storm where the disciples thought for sure they were going to die. Surprisingly Jesus said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?" What is so strange about this passage is the word "afraid" can mean "cowardly fear". In other words Jesus is saying, why are you guys acting like such cowards? Have you still no faith? The problem with the disciples was they had taken their eyes off of Jesus and instead were looking at the raging sea. They were also exhausted from the thousands of people coming to Jesus, they were possibly fearful because there was a hit out on Jesus (and they were Jesus' disciples), and Jesus was having them go to the other side where the gentiles lived. There isn't anything about this story that was easy yet they forgot who was in the boat with them. The God-man Jesus himself was sleeping in the stern of the boat. After being woken up and criticised by the disciples, Jesus calms the storm and leaves them great fear because of his ability to speak to creation and have it obey his commands. This story speaks to Christians today because we are called to be people of faith. When the disciples reacted in fear instead of faith Jesus rebuked them strongly by calling them cowards. Now, while it's true the disciples had acted like cowards they didn't stay cowards. In fact, they went on to live as incredibly faith filled men who preached Jesus all over the globe and all but John were martyred for their faith in Christ.
