Next up in my series on Sydney's suburbs is Wahroonga. Wahroonga is an affluent suburb in the Upper North Shore of Sydney, located 18 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district. Its name means 'our home, from the local Aboriginal dialect. Wahroonga is home to a number of prestigious schools, including Knox Grammar and Abbotsleigh School for Girls. Knox Grammar, established in 1924, has counted among its students some notable people including actors Hugh Jackman, Adam Garcia and Hugo Weaving, as well as local radio presenter John Laws. Wahroonga is also home a number of the heritage listed Rose Seidler House. It was built between 1948 and 1950 and is historically significant as a resource to demonstrate the many features of Modernist art, architecture and design theory and practice. According to the 2016 census, there were 17,371 residents in Wahroonga. 60.4% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were England 5.6%, China 5.6%, South Africa 2.6%, India 2.2% and New Zealand 1.9%.
