Negotiations have broken down. After a decade of relative peace, Istemi decides to strike those who have blocked his ambitions and those of his Sogdian allies for far too long. Over a period of 20 years, the Türks and Persians are going to war, battling for control of the Western Silk Roads in Sogdia and Bactria. Meanwhile, the Türks even confront the Byzantines, their allies, who have given refuge to the Avars – a tribal people that are by now being ruled by the Rouran, the Göktürks’ former masters. In retaliation, the Türks’ Oghuric allies besiege the Crimean peninsula. Simultaneously in the Far East, events regarding the succession of Taspar disrupt the very core of the Göktürk Khaganat, as four ambitious princes are vying for power in Ötüken. This internal strife opens the way to a decades-long civil war. To make matters worse, the Sui Dynasty managed to unify China for the first time in 400 years and now decides to challenge the Türks’ influence along the Yellow River. The Ashina Dynasty is confronted by hostility on all sides. They have no alternative but to fight – both against their enemies and their own flesh and blood. In Episode 3 of "The Celestial Turks," we take a deep look into the political, cultural, and economic history of the Göktürk Khaganate during its most precious era – a time that saw domination in Sogdia, comeuppance over the Chinese states and internal harmony among the Turkic peoples. We are also going to explore the conversion of Taspar to Buddhism and the factors that empowered the next generation of Turkic princes to vie for power against all odds.
