(14 Nov 2000) Natural Sound QUALITY AS INCOMING The fire which killed at least 156 people aboard an Austrian ski train probably started before it entered a mountain tunnel where it was then engulfed by flames. Police investigators say chemical analysis would be needed to identify a substance -- possibly a lubricant -- which dripped onto the track up the Kitzsteinhorn mountain, near Salzburg in western Austria. The findings offer the first possible clue as to what may have caused the inferno. The investigators' findings were the first confirmation of accounts given by some of the 12 survivors of last weekend's tragedy, Austria's worst peacetime disaster, who said they saw smoke before the train entered the tunnel. Results of chemical test on the grimy, oil-like residue found on the tracks could be expected in a day or two. Meanwhile investigators continue to comb the floor of the tunnel for traces of human remains to help identify victims of the inferno. Dozens of rescue workers battled against fatigue and exhaustion to pull bodies from the tunnel, working through the second straight night to try to recover as many as possible. Identifying the badly burned remains has become a painstaking task, and experts are collecting tooth brushes and razor blades in an effort to build a D-N-A database to cross match with samples from the bodies. #Austria #CableCar #Kitzsteinhorn Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
