In 1953, Chevrolet unveiled a two-seat roadster at the Motorama show inside the ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. It had a fiberglass body, whitewall tires, and a six-cylinder engine borrowed from a sedan. The car looked like a dream. It drove like a disappointment. The first Corvettes were slow, they leaked, the automatic transmission robbed whatever little power the engine had, and almost nobody bought one. Within two years, General Motors was ready to kill it. That was 1955. And here we are, over 70 years later, and the Corvette is still in production.
