This time I made a video on another Exclusive Pioneer LaserActive title. This flight simulator is called Hi-Roller Battle. A military surveillance satellite has confirmed that J LAND, intent on military buildup, has established secret military bases in the islands of the South Atlantic and is gathering armaments. A special unit is secretly dispatched to destroy the nuclear missile launching facility, but contact is lost with them just after they depart... You, and the Hi-Roller special attack helicopter squadron you belong to, have just received a muster call. Your mission is to take over all six secret enemy bases. Use every means of attack and defense possible to achieve your objective. The graphics dept is kind of a mixed bag. I like the FMV segments, full screen uncompressed analogue video was a treat back then and nothing did it better than LaserDisc. Then you get to the area where you choose to listen to debriefing, change ammo, and start mission, and it looks bare, plain and moves choppy. Poorly executed IMO. The graphics of the debriefing screen is no picnic either. Thankfully the screen where you change ammo is done up with decent sprites. The stages are decent looking for 1993 even though it moves at a bad frame rate sometimes. The graphics of the sprite helicopter and background graphics blend decently but not as well as one would hope. I do like the way some of the explosions look. Overall the graphics were just decent IMO. I believe if it had a better frame rate, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. The music is about average. You notice it while your playing but its not catchy enough to actually impress anyone and not very loud either. Some songs sound better than others but all are repetitive in nature and it doesn't take long to get tired of them. The sound effects are decently done using the Sega PAC. The guns and missiles sound good and even when your locked on and need to use flares to deflect the incoming missile, it sounds crisp and clear. The RSS sound is done nicely with explosions and gunfire that surround you. RSS was the best out in the early 90s and it sure did sound good. The control in Hi-Roller Battle is actually pretty damn good. Believe it or not it actually uses most of the buttons on the 6 button LaserActive Sega controller! You use Button A to shoot the gun turrets, Button B for missiles, Button Y to change missile types, Button Z to change incoming missile deflector, and you use Button C to use the deflectors. You use the D Pad to move the pointer around the screen of coarse, and the start button to pause the game. Bottom line: If your looking for another game to play on your LaserActive, and you love the idea of flight sim combat games, then I would suggest picking this game up. It is very difficult however so I would keep that in mind when buying this game. It is not for the weak gamers! ;) This disc is in 480i, and features Roland Sound Space Surround sound.
