"Balm in Gilead" - Performed and Produced by Cynthia Liggins Thomas - 2021 “There is a Balm in Gilead" is a traditional Negro Spiritual that dates back to the 19th century. The first publication of this spiritual is found in John Wesley Work, II's “Folk Songs of the American Negro” published in Nashville in 1907. The December 1909 recording by The Fisk University Jubilee Quartet, was integral in the dissemination of this spiritual. Moreover, The Fisk Jubilee Singers were the catalyst in making known the beautiful "Negro Spiritual" to the world. The “balm in Gilead” is a reference from the Old Testament but the lyrics of this spiritual refer to the New Testament Teachings of Salvation through Jesus Christ/Yehoshua. The Balm of Gilead is interpreted as a spiritual medicine that is able to heal Israel and all sinners in general - The Whole World.
