Channel / @chantandpoetry Playlist • St. Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter • Psalm 19: Coeli enarrant gloriam Dei Psalm 19 chanted in the Sarum Use by Sarah James. Themes: The heavens and their host proclaim the majesty of God; the excellence and perfection of the Divine law; its usefulness. The Psalmist prays for pardon and preservation from sin; and that his words and thoughts may be holy. There is no note in the Psalm itself to lead us to know when, where, or by whom it was written. It is a highly finished and beautiful ode. (From the Adam Clarke Commentary). In Judaism: The classical Jewish commentators all point to the connection the Psalmist makes between the sun and the Torah. These connections include: The Torah enlightens man, just as the sun lights his way; both the sun and the Torah testify to the glory of their Creator; the Torah is more perfect, whole, or complete than the powerful sun; while the sun conveys God's glory and greatness in the physical world, the Torah expresses God's glory in the spiritual realm. (Wikipedia) In Christianity: John Mason Good says that this psalm was composed either in the morning or around noon, when the bright sun eclipses the other heavenly bodies; he contrasts this with psalm 8, in which the psalmist contemplates the starry sky in the evening. Praising the poetry of this psalm, 20th-century British writer C. S. Lewis is quoted as saying: "I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.” (Wikipedia) Dr. Jack Hyles writes: “These words were written by David when he was anointed as a boy to become king. Samuel had come to the house of Jesse to anoint one of his sons as king. Jesse never thought of David. When all the other sons had been rejected by Samuel, then Jesse was reminded that David was in the fields. He reluctantly, and with some embarrassment, told Samuel of young David. Samuel went to David and anointed him to become the king. Picture David in the wilderness caring for the sheep writing this, one of the most beautiful of all the Psalms. What beautiful imagery is found in verses 1-6! What logic is found in verses 7-1 1! What an amazing warning is found in verse 13! What a tremendous secret to the Christian life is given in verse 14! David is seeking God's help as he assumes this amazing new responsibility. One of the most important prayers that he prays is in verse 12, "Cleanse Thou me from secret faults." The term "secret faults" means more than faults that are hidden from other people; it means faults that are hidden from David himself. There are certain faults that we have that we do not know that we have. David is asking God to reveal to him his faults and then cleanse him from those when they are revealed. It is interesting to note the three places the Christian is to look in this Psalm. In verses 1-6 he is to look UP. In verses 7-1 1 he is to look AT. In verses 12-14 he is to look IN. He looks up to God in verses 1-6; he looks at the Word of God in verses 7-11 and looks inside his own heart in verses 12-14.” Nine hundred years ago, the Cathedral of Salisbury, England developed a unique form of chant and liturgy known as the “Use of Salisbury,” or “Sarum Use.” Differences from the Roman rite are both melodic (more florid in the Sarum) and textual (Elizabethan English rather than Latin). The best repository of Sarum Use tones is the St. Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter, from which Sarah has sung this psalm.
