He alleges that influential individuals linked to the temple administration threatened him with death if he refused to comply. He fled Dharmasthala in 2014 after a relative was allegedly assaulted by someone connected to his supervisors. The whistleblower provided photographic evidence of skeletal remains he exhumed himself and offered to identify burial sites if granted protection under the Witness Protection Scheme, 2018. The case has reignited attention to unresolved incidents, such as the 2012 rape and murder of 17-year-old Sowjanya and the 2003 disappearance of Ananya Bhat, a medical student. Ananya’s mother, Sujatha Bhat, filed a second complaint seeking to recover her daughter’s remains. The Karnataka government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on July 19, 2025, led by DGP Pranav Mohanty, with DIG M.N. Anucheth, DCP Soumyalatha, and SP Jitendra Kumar Dayama, to probe the allegations and related cases. The Dakshina Kannada police have secured court permission to exhume alleged burial sites, but as of July 21, 2025, exhumation has not yet begun.
