It is one of only a few places in the world where you can witness wild manta rays aggregating in scientifically remarkable numbers. Reef Manta Rays are year-round residents of the Maldives, migrating across the country in tandem with the changing monsoons. April to October is Manta Season in Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, where Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences is located. Our guests can swim with a dozen or more mantas at cleaning stations and feeding stations around the area. As a Manta Trust partner, we ensure all guests behave responsibly and respectfully at all times during wild manta encounters. Hanifaru Bay is the jewel in the crown of the entire atoll. This protected area is a key aggregation site for reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi). It’s here that you may be lucky enough to witness over a hundred mantas cyclone-feeding on zooplankton trapped in the bay. As many as 247 of these gentle giants were recorded during one of these mass filter feeding events, commonly known as a ‘feeding frenzy’. Several majestic whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) have sometimes also been observed feeding here, too.
