Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was an American composer and pianist who is widely recognized as the "King of Ragtime." He composed 44 original ragtime pieces, including some of the most famous and enduring rags of all time, such as "The Entertainer," "Maple Leaf Rag," and "Solace." Joplin's rags are characterized by their syncopated rhythms, intricate melodies, and sophisticated harmonies, and they helped to popularize ragtime music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Joplin was born in Texarkana, Texas, to a musical family. He began playing the piano at an early age and showed a natural talent for music. He studied classical music and composition, but he was also drawn to the popular music of the day, such as ragtime and minstrel music. In the 1890s, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he became involved in the ragtime scene. He began composing and publishing his own ragtime pieces, which quickly gained popularity. His first published rag, "Original Rags," was published in 1897. He continued to compose rags throughout his life, and his most famous rags were published between 1899 and 1907. Joplin's ragtime music was characterized by its syncopated rhythms, lively melodies, and complex harmonies. His compositions were also notable for their use of African-American musical elements, such as blues and ragtime. Joplin's music was widely popular during his lifetime, and he was known as the "King of Ragtime." He was a major influence on other ragtime composers, such as Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson. Joplin's rags were popular in both the United States and Europe. He toured extensively as a performer, and his music was featured in vaudeville shows and silent films. He also founded his own publishing company, and he helped to promote the careers of other ragtime composers. Joplin's music fell out of favor in the 1920s, and he died in relative obscurity in 1917. However, his music was rediscovered in the 1970s, and he is now considered one of the most important American composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Joplin's ragtime pieces are still enjoyed by audiences around the world. His music is known for its energy, its humor, and its sophistication, and it continues to inspire and influence musicians of all genres. ========================================================================== See website for more info about my publications: http://www.tenorbanjo.co.uk eBooks: Apple EPUB / Lulu / Kindle Paperbacks: Amazon / Lulu MP3 Downloads: iTunes / Amazon / YouTube / Spotify / Pandora Videos: YouTube
