(3 May 1996) Arabic/Nat Israeli-Arab writer Emile Habibi has been buried in Haifa, the town where he was born almost 74 years ago. Habibi, who died of pancreatic cancer, was the first Arab writer to win Israel's top literary award for his chronicle of the predicaments of Israel's Arab citizens. A special memorial service in Nazareth was attended by family as well as exiled poet Mahmoud Darwish. Israeli-Arab writer Emile Habibi was buried Friday in Haifa, the town where he was born 73, on 29 August 1922. Habibi, who earned himself Israel's top literary award, died of pancreatic cancer Thursday in Nazareth. He was the first Arab to win the prestigious Israeli award and had published three other satirical works. In recent months, Habibi also started publishing articles calling for the acceleration of peace and an end to the violence. Habibi, who founded the Israeli communist party in the 1940s, was also editor of its daily paper Al-Ittihad for over 40 years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. His will was that the words - "Emile Habibi is forever in Haifa" - will be written on his tombstone. One of the many people to attend the funeral was the renowned Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, who had come back to Israel after a 26 years' of exile. Darwish, 53, is known for his poems about his people's longing for a homeland and the suffering of displaced Palestinians. He delivered the eulogy at the memorial service in Nazareth's church of Annunciation. But Israel stripped him of his citizenship when he joined the PLO in 1970. Now he lives as an exile in Jordan. He was allowed to re-enter Israel to attend Habibi's funeral. Another speaker at the memorial service was Palestinian minister for Information and Culture Yasser Abed Rabbo.
