In today’s art history documentary from History Calling I give you a full biography of Hans Holbein, from his youth in Augsburg with his father, Hans Holbein the Elder and brother Ambrosius, to how the Reformation affected his work, his marriage and children, his time in England (where he was introduced to Thomas More by way of Desiderius Erasmus), his famous royal patrons, and his eventual death in London and the scandalous details his last will and testament revealed. We’ll also look at some of his most famous works, including his drawings of Tudor courtiers, the Whitehall Mural and The Ambassadors and at how he created such lifelike images, with some behind the scenes peeks at Hans Holbein’s technique.
