This week we're tackling an especially fun and slightly off-the-radar topic, namely European rum. No, not rum bottled in Europe, I'm talking about rum made in Europe. There's quite a lot of it these days, and I've assembled enough samples for a full week on the stuff. And because quite a disproportionate amount of Eurum is coming from Scotland we may as well start there! Four distilleries spread across two flights, for a total of nine bottlings. Here we go: ROUND 1 (2:42): Sugar House Scottish Pure Single White Rum (Dumbarton; pot-distilled molasses, bottled circa 2023; 43% ABV), 81/100 Islay Rum Company "Gael" Pure Single Rum, 2022 Inaugural Release (Port Ellen; molasses distilled in double retort pot still; 45% ABV), 82+/100 Ninefold Distillery Pure Single Rum, Unaged (Dalton, Dumfries & Galloway; molasses distilled in hybrid pot still, bottled circa 2023; 46% ABV), 83-/100 Ninefold Distillery Cask Aged Rum (Dalton, Dumfries & Galloway; molasses distilled in hybrid pot still and aged in American oak, bottled circa 2023; 45% ABV), 83+/100 ROUND 1 (27:27): J. Gow Distillery "Culverin" Unaged Scottish Pure Single Rum (Lamb Holm; hybrid-distilled molasses, bottled circa 2022; 50% ABV), 84/100 J. Gow Distillery "Kveik 2022" Unaged Scottish Pure Single Rum (Lamb Holm; hybrid-distilled molasses fermented with Norwegian Kveik yeast, bottled circa 2022; 62% ABV), 87/100 J. Gow Distillery "Revenge" 3 Year Old Pure Single Rum (Lamb Holm; pot distilled molasses aged three years in ex-bourbon and virgin oak, bottled circa 2022; 43% ABV), 82+/100 J. Gow Distillery "Fading Light" Chestnut Cask Aged Pure Single Rum (Lamb Holm; pot distilled molasses aged three years in chestnut, bottled circa 2022; 43% ABV), 83/100 J. Gow Distillery "Hidden Depths Vol. 2" 5 Year Old Single Cask Pure Single Rum (Lamb Holm; pot distilled molasses aged in an "ex bere whisky/OWC oak cask," bottled circa 2022; 51.2% ABV), 86/100 A lot of these - a lot of these - were basically well-made and totally serviceable but ultimately unremarkable "craft" rums, blending whipped cream, citrus, and a bit of minerality with solid mouth presence. I think the J. Gow Culverin was the best of that style, and the aged Ninefold was my favorite of the basic aged bottlings (yes it's oaky, but it maintains a certain brightness that adds depth). The standouts were really the J. Gow special bottlings: the Kveik has a really fun fruit-compost-on-fire character, especially on the finish, while the Hidden Depths 2 has some terrific texture and a lovely sour note. So overall, not an amazing showing from Scottish rum but there's certainly some promise! Next time, on to the continent...
