Welcome to another history special where I walk around Nunney Castle. Nunney Castle, owned by English herirage, was built around 1370’s by John de la Mare, a trusted knight from King Edward III’s court. It had a few owners since its construction but in 1577 it was sold to Richard Prater for £2000 and remained in the family for many generations. During the English Civil War, the Prater family backed King Charles Ist and was besieged and damaged by the Parliamentarians in 1645. General Fairfax’s army opened up with cannon fire causing much damage to the walls and interior. All that remains today is the shell of the castle, but considering the castle’s history, its still in very good condition.
