The Class 777 fleet represents the newest generation of rolling stock on the Merseyrail network, replacing the long-serving Class 507 and 508 units. Built by Stadler, these trains bring improved acceleration, regenerative braking, open gangways, air-conditioning, clearer passenger information systems and a noticeably smoother ride compared to the older fleet. This journey begins at the coastal terminus of West Kirby before heading through the Wirral peninsula, under the River Mersey, into Liverpool’s underground city loop, and then back out towards West Kirby again. The Wirral Line is one of the most unique suburban railway systems in the UK due to its circular underground section beneath Liverpool city centre and the historic Mersey Railway Tunnel between James Street and Hamilton Square. The Class 777 units feel noticeably more modern, with bright interiors, smooth traction sounds and strong but refined acceleration. As the train departs West Kirby, you can immediately hear the difference compared to older units. The ride along the coastal stretch between Hoylake and Meols offers open views before the line becomes more suburban approaching Moreton and Leasowe. Bidston is always a key interchange point, offering connections to the Borderlands Line towards Wrexham Central and Wrexham General. After Bidston, the line becomes busier through Birkenhead before diving into the underground section at Hamilton Square. Passing beneath the River Mersey remains one of the most historic and atmospheric parts of the route. Arriving into Liverpool Lime Street low level, the network connections expand significantly, linking to Merseyrail’s wider system and mainline operators at the upper level station. After completing the city loop, the service continues back out toward the Wirral, maintaining small incremental delays of one to two minutes through parts of the second half of the journey before arriving back into West Kirby slightly early.
