Why do women boxers have to wear headgear but not men? Helmet Use in Boxing: The tragic death of South Korean boxer Kim Duk-koo in a fight against Ray Mancini in 1982 prompted a reevaluation of safety rules in boxing. As a result, rules were introduced or reinforced to ensure the mandatory use of headgear and improve medical supervision and safety measures for boxers in Olympic competition. Then Folowing a major research conducted on the safety of headgear, it was determined that head pads acryally increased the likelyhood of concussions.
