The village of Suna (Italy) has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as proven by some historical finds discovered during archaeological excavations. The first church is mentioned in a parchment from 1096, when it belonged to the parish of Intra. In 1234, the canons of the central church of Verbania granted autonomy to the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which was to be the centre of religious life in the village for centuries. The parish was officially born on 2 August 1346, encompassing a vast territory between the mountains and Lake Maggiore. The sudden increase in population made it difficult for a single parish priest to exercise the care of souls, which is why a new church dedicated to Saint Lucy, the patron saint of stonemasons, was built. The new church was erected at the end of the 16th century, as evidenced by a bell tower stone dated 1585. The bishop of Novara praised the new construction, which was entrusted to the care of the main confraternities in the area. The community of Suna was struck by a terrible plague epidemic in 1746, which left almost the entire population, including the parish priest, with no chance. The bell tower was restored in 1928 and equipped with a concert of five bells in the scale of E major, cast in the key of the three already present. The concert has eight bells in a diatonic scale. The five bells were made by Barigozzi in Milan, while the three original bells date back to 1720, 1656 and 1687 in order of size.
