Ardbeg 10 Year 2022 vs. 2007 Islay Single Malt Whisky

Recently I began hearing murmurs about the 2022 Ardbeg Ten being particularly good. So, I picked one up at $55 to see for myself. The history of a 10 year age stated Ardbeg dates back to the 70’s & 80’s – when the original "Guaranteed 10 years old" were around. Unfortunately, a few comings and goings of companies left a gap in production of it in the 1990’s. But in 1997 Glenmorangie took over ownership, and they dedicated themselves to the brand and age stated releases. With that, in 2000 we saw the reemergence of bottles stating "Guaranteed 10 years old" with the initial year wearing an additional “Introducing Ten Years Old” banner on the upper corner of the box. The subsequent 22 years of Ardbeg Ten have continued to be widely available, always non chill-filtered, bottled at a respectable 46% abv, and a really solid value. So, it’s easy to see why it’s regarded as an essential Islay whisky to own and/or experience. So, with that little peek at the history of Ardbeg Ten, I decided it would be fun and educational for me to sit down and review the current 2022 batch against one from 2007. Instead of just finishing the bourbon in Armagnac casks, we've also used some that rested in French Pineau des Charentes casks – “Pineau” is unfiltered grape juice (sometimes lightly fermented) that’s fortified with Cognac and barrel aged.
