“My name is Mecca. I attend the nation’s first HBCU — Cheyney University. I’m from Philly, and this is my story.” Introducing HBCYou, a new series spotlighting Philly students attending HBCUs and the journeys shaping their identity, purpose, and future in partnership with AUC Philly Club. For our first episode of HBCYou, we’re spotlighting Mecca, a Philly native finding purpose through legacy, creativity, and community at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the first HBCU in the nation. For Mecca, being at an HBCU isn’t just about classes or campus life. It’s about: • learning Black history from Black professors • walking in the footsteps of ancestors who fought for access to education • being surrounded by people who want you to win • and choosing a path that feels aligned with who you are From North Philly to Cheyney, from the arts to communications, Mecca reminds us that purpose comes from loving what you do even when it feels “too much” to other people.
