From Siachen to Sri Lanka: India’s Strategic Moves in the 1980s || Defence Decades

The late 1970s and 1980s were a turbulent and transformative period for India with political shifts, daring military operations and significant steps towards self-reliance. Amongst operations of significance, we have the daring Operation Meghdoot of 1984, the pre-emptive Indian move to occupy the Siachen Glacier before Pakistan could act. Executed without firing a single shot, it gave India control over the world’s highest battlefield, underscoring the importance of preemption and strategic foresight. Another operation that is spoken about less but requires our attention is the Indian Army’s operation in Sumdorong Chu in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, in response to Chinese intrusion. We then turn to India’s southern neighbour with Operation Poomalai (1987) and the subsequent induction of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka.
