If you’re too young to have read David Reuben’s 1969 best-seller ‘Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask’ and you haven’t got around to the Kama Sutra, then Shobhaa Dé’s latest book might be of interest to you. I would describe it as a manual on how to make love and how not to do it, the different ways of attempting it and how to enhance your pleasure as well as that of your partner. There are parts of the books that might make you blush or squirm but for the most part the book is full of sage and sensible advice. It’s called ‘The Sensual Self: Explorations of Love, Sex & Romance’. In this interview, Shobhaa Dé talks about her book and discusses the advice she’s offered, in particular to Indian men who, she says, do not know how to make love fulfillingly and satisfyingly and need to learn that it is important to pleasure and satisfy their partner whilst seeking their own sexual satisfaction. In the book, Shobhaa Dé ranges widely over a multiplicity of subjects connected with sexual attraction and love making. She talks about the art of undressing, the connection between food and sex, suhaag raat, the art of kissing, the importance of female breasts, male erogenous zones, faking orgasms, valuing and respecting women, not reducing love making to a mere matter of fact hastily completed routine and the need to enjoy it and, as she puts it, “make it last”. I will stop there. This is an interview where Shobhaa Dé should be allowed to speak for herself. I don’t want to do anything more than introduce her.
