Coyote and the Twin Sisters: A Hike Through Native American History

Martin Surridge teaches his American Literature students about the Native American trickster god known as Coyote with the Cayuse story of Coyote and the Twin Sisters, while on the banks of the Columbia River. By hiking up to these basalt rock formations near the border of Washington and Oregon, people can get a better idea of how the landscape changed in Ice Age floods 15,000 years ago, and how those floods impacted Native American literature as well as the history of the Pacific Northwest.
