Rorate Caeli from Twelve Choral-Preludes on Gregorian Chant Themes (Op. 8) by Jeanne Demessieux performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 1954 Downes/Walker organ of the London Oratory Church on Thursday 5th November 2020. Jeanne Demessieux (1921-1968) began her studies at the Paris Conservatoire aged 12, and later studied the organ with Marcel Dupré. She would eventually share with her teacher the impressive ability to play the entire organ works of Bach from memory. A well-regarded composer, academic and recording artist, she combined the church posts of Saint-Espirit (1933-1962) and La Madeleine (1962-8) with teaching posts at the conservatoires of Nancy (1950-2) and Liège (1952-1968). Many of her organ works are expressions of her deep Catholic faith. The Twelve Choral-Preludes on Gregorian Chant Themes date from 1947 and cover much of the liturgical year. The first one of the set, Rorate Caeli (Drop down ye heavens, from above) is drawn from the plainsong tune also known as the 'Advent Prose'. Demessieux's setting calls for the distinctive Cornet sound, which coupled with some mystical harmony, lends the piece an appropriately devotional and meditative tone. Ben Bloor is Organist at the London Oratory Church and School Organist at Westminster School. For more information, please visit https://www.benbloor.com
