Mario Molina: The Chemist Who Changed the World

Mario Molina was a Mexican-American chemist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 for his research on the depletion of the Earth's ozone layer. He was born on March 19, 1943, in Mexico City, Mexico, and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) before pursuing a PhD in physical chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Molina's research, which he conducted alongside Sherwood Rowland and Paul Crutzen, revealed the damaging effects of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on the Earth's ozone layer. Their findings led to the adoption of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty aimed at phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances. In addition to his Nobel Prize, Molina was also awarded the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013 and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 1983. He was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and the University of California, Berkeley, and served on numerous scientific advisory boards and committees.
