If, as James Walsh claims in The Intelligencer, Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College, then how do we deal with that? The rhetoric about "solutions" to AI-related problems is focused on changes in policy (write the perfect syllabus policy!) pedagogy (teach students how to use AI ethically!), and assessment (write by hand on paper!). What if, though, at the foundation of the "cheating" issue is a motivation issue? One path forward, then, might be to try to understand student motivation and try to figure out what could motivate students to truly commit to the learning experience and to not seek shortcuts.
