Here's my new single. This song reminds of being a teenager and discovering The Beatles for the first time. I'm brought right back to my adolescent belief that I alone understood The Beatles' vision for their Apple Records label. And that while everyone else living in the late 70's was busy replacing The Beatles with Phil Collins, I thought I alone understood their passion for artists like Jackie Lomax. So, in the late 70's I began collecting every LP I could with an Apple logo on it (no, not the computer company). One of my earliest deep-dive finds was Jackie Lomax' "Is This What You Want", an album produced by George Harrison. It was a commercial flop. Certainly not because half of everybody on the London/Los Angleles scene played on it (Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voormann, Hal Blaine, Larry Knechtel and more); but because The Beatles didn't know squat about how run a record label or promote the great music they were pumping out. Jackie's album was full of gorgeous ballads, which have particularly stuck to my musical ribs. So much so that I knew one day I must record them myself. And now the dream is real. The first single from my upcoming record is "Fall Inside Your Eyes" and I wish I'd written it my self. But you know, Jackie is so obscure, I should probably just tell folks that I DID write it. No one would be the wisely-er. In 2005, on what was probably Jackie's final tour, I met him on the side of the stage at The Alterknit in Hollywood just following his set with a ragtag pick up band trying their damndest to honor the man. I effusively thanked him and had him sign my original Apple LP. But sadly he seemed confused by all the energy. Maybe it was just a British stoicism, or maybe it was that he'd fallen too deep inside the eyes of The Beatles. I can't know. But it was clear that my words were popping like soap bubbles around his ears and that I wouldn't truly reach him with compliments. None the less, his signature on the LP jacket is one I cherrish, across the cover of my original US pressing.
