It comprises of free verses & sung on especial occasions & at the end of a musical program. Mostly, musical instruments are not played with it. It is believed locally that it is the oldest poetry produced in Khowar. The history of the set of songs in Ashru Jan is obscure & it seems that various people have added verses on their own in it with the passage of time as evident from the variations of the song that are available. Many now consider Ashru Jan a whole new genre rather a song because of the variants which have been written over the time.
