STORYLINE: Cuba's acting president, Raul Castro, led a celebration in Havana on Sunday night commemorating the birthday of the Cuban independence leader and poet Jose Marti. Marti was born on January 28, 1853. A torchlight march in his honour started at Havana's main university and ended several blocks away with a fireworks display. Raul Castro led the procession, carrying a small Cuban flag. The event included speeches and musical entertainment from a variety of artists. Raul Castro has been Cuba's acting leader since 31 July 2006 when his older brother, Fidel, announced he was stepping aside temporarily while recovering from intestinal surgery. Jose Marti is viewed as a national hero in Cuba and Fidel Castro considers him a spiritual leader of the independence movement. Next year, Cuba will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power.
