Among the callings Christ has given to His Church, the role of pastor is perhaps the most familiar... yet familiarity does not always produce understanding. In this entry we explore the biblical picture of pastoral ministry through the image Scripture repeatedly uses: the shepherd. Pastors serve as under-shepherds of Christ, caring for the flock that ultimately belongs to Him. We’ll examine the heart of true shepherding, the quiet and often unseen work pastors carry out in the lives of believers, and the responsibility they hold not only to nurture the flock but also to guard it from spiritual harm. Drawing from passages such as Psalm 23, John 10, Acts 20, and 1 Peter 5, this teaching also addresses the difference between a calling and a career, the danger of confusing pastoral ministry with other callings, and the contrast Jesus made between true shepherds and hirelings. Faithful pastors rarely seek recognition, yet their care shapes the stability and growth of the Church.
