The city of Saalfeld in Thuringia, Germany, which was first mentioned in a document in 899, is a place steeped in history. Mainly because of its preserved historical buildings, Saalfeld is called the "Stone Chronicle of Thuringia". A side trip to the district town with about 30,000 inhabitants is therefore particularly worthwhile. The historic, lovingly restored old town is surrounded by the almost completely preserved ring of city walls from the 13th/14th century. Of the five former city gates, four still grant access to the city center, where many merchants have recalled Saalfeld's old tradition as a commercial center with a varied range of products and services, making Saalfeld a shopping experience today. Those who want to get an overview can do so from the crenellated roof of the "Darrtor" and at the same time gain a wide view into the country over the Saale and Orla valleys with their graceful heath landscape to the wooded mountain slopes of the Thuringian Slate Mountains and the Thuringian Forest. However, the town fortifications are by no means among the oldest "entries" in the "Stone Chronicle", which was begun under Emperor Barbarossa, who held court here at his palace and inspired the founding of the town. The former seat of the town bailiff at the market, today the market pharmacy, is a rare evidence of Romanesque architecture also on secular buildings. Stone witnesses of all building epochs can now be found and lined up in the "chronicle", whereby the magnificent Renaissance town hall, St. John's Church and the former Franciscan monastery, today's town museum, are certainly particularly striking. Anyone expecting a dry and dusty chronicle and museum atmosphere in Saalfeld will be proven wrong on the "Historical Tour". Along romantic alleys, through green islands of small courtyards or parks, over centuries-old cobblestones, the route leads through living city history that can be experienced on foot. Street cafes and small pubs - rustic or funky, but always specially decorated - invite you to stop along the way. The proverbial Thuringian hospitality is also offered in the well-kept hotel industry, and so the guest can also test the varied leisure activities offered in the afternoon and evening. Not to be left unmentioned are the scenic surroundings of Saalfeld in Thuringia with extensive coniferous forests and lush mixed forests, which invite to relaxing hikes. Also worth seeing is Eyba Castle, which is over 1,000 years old and can also be reached on foot from the fairy grottos in 30 minutes.
